Navigating special education can feel overwhelming, but you are not alone. Romulus Central School District values the partnership between families and schools. We encourage parents and caregivers to ask questions, participate in meetings, and work collaboratively with our staff to support each student's success.

The following resources are available to help you better understand the special education process and your rights as a parent.

Your Rights as a Parent

Parents and guardians of students with disabilities have important rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and New York State Education Law.
These rights include:
  • Participating in decisions regarding your child's education
  • Receiving written notice before certain changes are made to your child's educational program
  • Providing informed consent for evaluations and services
  • Reviewing your child's educational records
  • Requesting meetings to discuss your child's program
  • Accessing dispute resolution options when concerns cannot be resolved collaboratively

A copy of the Procedural Safeguards Notice is provided to parents at key points throughout the special education process and is available upon request.
