Welcome! This page provides an overview of homeschooling requirements in New York State. Whether you're just getting started or continuing your homeschool journey, this guide outlines the general regulations, paperwork, and instructional requirements for grades K–12.
General Requirements for Homeschooling in New York State

Annual Letter of Intent due by July 1 or within 14 days if beginning mid-year.

Instruction must be substantially equivalent to that provided in public schools.

Instruction totals must match 180 days / 900 hours (grades 1–6) or 180 days / 990 hours (grades 7–12).

Submit to the district superintendent annually, by July 1 (or within 14 days of starting mid-year).

Individualized Home Instruction Plan (IHIP)

Submit within four weeks of receipt or by August 15.

IHIP must include syllabi/curriculum per required subjects, instructor name(s), and evaluation plan.

Quarterly Reports

Four per school year.

Include instructional hours, summary of covered material, and grades or narrative.

Annual Assessment

Grades 1–3: Parent narrative evaluation.

Grades 4–8: Test or alternate evaluation every other year.

Grades 9–12: Standardized testing each year.

Approved tests include Iowa, CAT, Stanford, or tests listed on the NYSED site.

Instructional Requirements by Grade Band
Grades K–6
Must include:

Reading, Writing, Spelling, English Language

Arithmetic

Geography, U.S. History, Science

Health, Physical Education

Visual Arts, Music

Patriotism & Citizenship

Fire & Traffic Safety

At least one unit of New York State History before grade 6
Grades 7–8
Include:

Art, Music, Practical Arts, Library Skills

NY State History (if not completed earlier)
Grades 9–12
Over the four years, the following minimum units are required:

English — 4 units

Social Studies — 4 units (U.S. History, Economics, Government)

Mathematics — 2 units

Science — 2 units

Art or Music — 1 unit

Health — 0.5 unit

Physical Education — 2 units (0.5 units/year)

Electives — 6.5 units (over 4 years)
Total at least 22 units at the completion of senior year
